EBR’s 100th Edition Colorfully Celebrated

The 100th edition of Ethiopian Business Review (EBR) magazine was colorfully celebrated at Radisson Blu hotel yesterday, on 14th of September 2021.

The event was attended by Yonathan Tesfaye, Deputy Director-General of the Ethiopian Media Authority, Amare Aregawi, Executive Chairman of the Ethiopian Media Council, senior government officials, partner organizations, and invited guests.

In his opening remarks, Amanyehun S. Reda, Founder of Champion Communications, gave an overview of the organization and its overall process.

“EBR started its work 10 years ago with the aim of providing access to information to enhance the participation of the private sector in the Ethiopian economy,” Amanyehun said.

Deputy Director-General of the Ethiopian Media Authority, Yonathan Tesfaye spoke that “media in Ethiopia has passed many challenges. Overcoming these challenges is a great victory.” He also said that it is a great achievement in itself for a private media house which serves as a source of information to stay long with all kinds of obstacles around.

He added, “although the magazine is currently in its 100th edition, it could reach 100 years with hard work and dedication.”

For his part, Tamirat Astatkie, General Manager of Champion Communications, noted that the journey to reach the 100th edition of the magazine has not been easy. The low level of reading culture, constant printing expense hikes, shortage of qualified journalists, and the inability of the sector to retain talent are among the challenges of the sector, he mentioned.

Another major challenge he pinpointed is that print media in general is facing the inability to keep pace with today’s digital world. But his media house is strengthening its digital department to enable all publications—including EBR—to remain an increasingly accessible reliable source of information, with its influence maintained to take advantage of opportunities of the digital world.

“As an institution, we need to organize ourselves for the common good and increase the government’s positive focus on the sector,” he said while calling upon the necessity of solidarity amongst the nation’s media organizations.

The occasion was concluded by giving due recognition to long-subscribed readers, sources and content providers, commentators, advertisers, printers, and distributors of the magazine.

Champion Communications, publisher of EBR and Addis Maleda newspaper and magazine, has been in the media business for the past ten years.
