Towards-Safer-Healing-Navigating-the-Challenges-of-Orthopedic-Care.jpg

One major challenge in orthopaedic practice is the complications that may arise from traditional bone-setting methods among trauma patients. Many pediatric patients who experience trauma often visit local bone setters for repeated massages before eventually going to a hospital when complications arise. By this point, it may be too late to save limbs, forcing doctors, in many instances, to amputate to preserve the patients’ lives. This may result in permanent disability and impairment. EBR’s Dr Brook Genene examines how these traditional treatment methods can cause more harm than good in many cases. He explores potential solutions.

A Growing Burden on Amanuel Hospital

For many years, Amanuel Hospital has been Ethiopia’s sole mental health services provider. With increased awareness about the illness and rising demand for care, many government and private hospitals have started integrating mental health care with other services. There has also been an increasing number of private practices in the capital and big regional cities. Despite these changes, the burden on Amanuel Hospital remains. The hospital accommodates 500-600 patients daily. With rising demand for holistic care, shortage of staff, and inadequate funding, one of the oldest health institutions faces multifaceted challenges, including the need for more resources, better infrastructure, and increased public awareness. EBR’s Dr. Brook Genene assesses the current situation of the hospital and the state of mental health care in the country.

However, work-related stress poses a significant threat to this goal. EBR’s Dr. Brook Genene examines how stress affects pregnancy and offers insights on how women can manage stress in today’s workplace.

Dehydration-A-Silent-Killer.jpg

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. Symptoms range from thirst and headaches to severe complications such as kidney problems and even death. While staying hydrated seems straightforward, many underestimate its importance for a healthy life.

Experts stress magnesium’s crucial role in water absorption and advise increasing the intake of magnesium-rich foods. Moreover, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can also contribute to hydration. By being aware of dehydration symptoms and taking preventive measures, such as maintaining adequate fluid intake and seeking medical help when needed, one can significantly reduce the risk of death from this silent killer. EBR’s Dr. Brook Genene delves into this issue with medical professionals, examining the various health threats it poses.
