The Story of Michael Belayneh

Michael Belayneh, a celebrated Ethiopian singer born in Addis Ababa, has captivated audiences with his soulful melodies and positive lyrics. His musical journey began at Yared Music School, where he honed his talents before joining Medina Band and launching a successful solo career with his debut album, Ante Godana, in 2005. Known for blending traditional and contemporary styles, Michael’s work reflects a deep emotional connection with his audience. His later albums, including Nafkot Ena Fikir, have garnered critical acclaim, showcasing his ability to evoke nostalgia and love through music. As he embraces the evolving landscape of the music industry, Michael remains committed to creating art that resonates deeply, inspiring a new generation of listeners while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Ethiopia.

EBR’s Mesfin Feleke sat for an exclusive interview with the singer, delving into his artistic journey and insights, as the signer’s latest album, “And Qal”, [One Word], rocks the music industry by storm.

Michael Belayneh, a talented singer from Ethiopia, was born and raised in the vibrant capital city of Addis Ababa. Growing up in a culturally rich environment, he developed a profound love for music early on. “For me, music has always been a passion to live for,” he shares, encapsulating the essence of his artistic journey.

While pursuing formal education at Addis Ababa University (AAU), Michael began taking piano lessons with a private tutor at the esteemed Yared Music School. This experience solidified his musical talent, particularly in singing. “There, I confirmed my talent for music,” he recalls, reflecting on the pivotal moments that shaped his future.

He joined the Medina Band as a part-time English song singer during his formative years. His performances at various nightclubs in the city allowed him to hone his craft and gain valuable experience in the competitive music scene. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his later success.

In 2003, Michael embarked on a significant project: producing his solo album with the renowned arranger Elias Melka, who passed away a few years ago. This collaboration was a turning point in Michael’s career, leading to the release of his debut album, ‘Ante Godana (The Street)’, in 2005. “This album brought me closer to a larger audience,” he explains. The album’s success was gradual but profound, winning the hearts of music lovers with its positive and relaxing vibes.

Tracks such as “Siqe Eshegnishalehu (I will let you go with a smile on the face),” “Etebikishalehu (I will be waiting for you),” and “Yefikir Mirchaye (My choice of love)” became anthems of joy and emotional resonance. Michael’s ability to craft songs that reflect positivity is a cornerstone of his artistic identity. “The tracks are deeply driven by positivity,” he notes, emphasizing his commitment to uplifting his listeners.

Following the success of ‘Ante Godana’, Michael continued to explore his musical style. In 2010, he released “Tizita,” a slow rock single that showcased his versatility. Tizita songs are known for intensely moving listeners’ emotions among many audiences in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Many compare the Tizita genre to the blues in the African American musical genre, with a distinct melancholic and sombre tone.

Later, in 2012, Michael came up with a new album, ‘Nafkot Ena Fikir’ (Nostalgia & Love). The album marked another milestone in his career. This album was celebrated as the ‘Album of the Year’ by Sheger FM 102.1 Radio Listeners Choice, a testament to its popularity.

Michael reflects on his journey, saying, “I always have hope, regardless of whether a new year is approaching.” His optimism is evident in his music, which often embodies themes of hope and nostalgia and resonates deeply with his audience.

Michael has observed the growing influence of technology and artificial intelligence as the music industry evolves. “In our country, the need for bands is growing, especially this year,” he mentions, noting the increasing demand for live music. He views AI as a tool that can enhance creativity rather than replace the human touch in music. “AI brings added creativity to bands, but live performances are still something AI can’t replace,” he asserts, highlighting the irreplaceable essence of live music.

Collaborations with various artists and poets have enriched Michael’s musical journey. He has worked closely with Zemen Band, contributing to songs like “Nafkot” and “Fikir.” Despite the band’s disbandment, his connections with its members remain strong. “My connection with Zemen Band goes way back,” he reminisces, as these relationships have been integral to his growth as an artist.

Moreover, Michael appreciates the depth that poets bring to his music. “I find the work of poets to be impressive, unique, and profound,” he expresses, explaining that many of his lyrics are crafted by individuals with deep insights but limited ties to the music industry. This approach allows for rich narratives that resonate deeply with listeners.

The release of Michael’s latest album “And Qal”, which means [One Word], has been met with enthusiasm from fans. “It feels like I’ve invested in the stock market, watching the views on my YouTube channel grows,” he shares, highlighting the remarkable response to his music. Within a week, his songs collectively garnered five million views, underscoring his popularity. “I have been reading the comments, which are very encouraging,” he notes, revealing how audience feedback has shifted his perspective on his work.

Michael’s political science and business background gives him a unique perspective on the music industry. “Music is indeed a business, especially in today’s world,” he states. He recognizes the challenges faced by artists who pursue their passions while navigating a profit-driven industry. “Those who approach it as a profit-driven venture often earn more,” he explains. Despite the challenges, Michael has adapted to the evolving landscape, finding ways to balance his artistic pursuits with business acumen.

As a musician, Michael has had the opportunity to perform in various parts of the world, creating unforgettable experiences. “During my show in Seattle, I was pleasantly surprised by the large number of Ethiopian fans who attended,” he recalls. Another standout moment occurred in Beirut, where he was overwhelmed by enthusiastic fans seeking photos after his performance. “The experience was unforgettable,” he says, reflecting on his vibrant connection with his audience.

Michael’s family plays a significant role in his life and music. His children have recently begun listening to his songs, with one of their favourites being “Sike Eshegnishalehu.” He recalls, “When I took them to school, I observed that they love my song.” His wife, too, has a special connection to his music, particularly enjoying the songs “Filega [the search]” and “Be melkish adelem [not because of your look],” which he sang during their wedding.

Michael is an avid listener of various music genres and is fond of jazz. He cites the album “New Renaissance” by Bizuayehu Demissie and Ephrem Tamru as one of his favourites. He admires Dawit Tsige’s work from contemporary music, especially the tracks “Etitu” and “Ye Zemen Kanawoch.” His diverse musical tastes contribute to his rich artistic expression.

Michael notes both highs and lows when comparing the Ethiopian music industry of the past to its current state. “Today, advanced technology makes it easier for anyone to create music, but this doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the music will be of high quality,” he observes. He acknowledges artists’ challenges in navigating an evolving landscape where opportunities and obstacles coexist.

As Michael reflects on his journey, he expresses gratitude to those who have supported him. “I want to express my gratitude to everyone involved in my album,” he says. He highlights specific individuals, including Kirubel Tesfaye, Michael Hailu, and Andy Betezema, for their contributions to the arrangements, as well as lyricists like Mesfin W/tinsay, Solomon Sahle, Anteneh Aklilu, and Dawit Tesfaye.

Michael Belayneh’s journey from the streets of Addis Ababa to international acclaim is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and artistic vision. Through his music, he entertains, inspires, and uplifts his audience. As he continues to navigate the complexities of the music industry, Michael remains a beacon of hope and creativity, sharing his unique voice with the world. His story reminds us of the power of music to connect people across cultures and generations, leaving a lasting impact on all who experience it. EBR
