More than Just a Library
Abrehot’s Impact on Addis Ababa’s Intellectual and Professional Landscape
Drawing people from all walks of life, Abrehot Library has become a sanctuary of learning and connection in Addis Ababa. From eager students seeking quiet study spaces to ambitious business owners looking for a hub of innovation, this Library has transformed into a cherished haven. Its state-of-the-art facilities, rich collection of resources, and inviting atmosphere have created a magnetic pull, making it the go-to destination for the capital’s curious minds and entrepreneurs alike. EBR’s Mintesinot Nigussie walks through the wonders of Abrehot Library, uncovering how it has become more than just a library but a beacon of opportunity in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia, a country with a profound intellectual and cultural legacy, is often overlooked in global Enlightenment discourses. The European Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th centuries introduced thinkers like Locke, Rousseau, and Kant, but Ethiopia had already been a land of philosophical exploration. Zera Yacob, a brilliant Ethiopian philosopher from 1599 to 1692, championed ideas of reason, ethics, and tolerance long before such concepts gained momentum in Europe. His student, Welda Heywat (1633–1710), further advanced these ideas, showcasing Ethiopia’s intellectual tradition.
The wisdom of Ethiopian leaders like the Queen of Sheba, who famously visited King Solomon and established the Solomonic dynasty, shaped Ethiopia’s story for centuries. Even Ethiopia’s unique Ge’ez script, one of the few original writing systems in the world, stands as a testament to the nation’s remarkable intellectual legacy. Far beyond its role in the church, Ge’ez has profoundly shaped Ethiopia’s knowledge systems, influencing philosophy, history, law, philology, and medicine.
In modern Ethiopia, the Abrehot Library, officially opened on January 1st, 2022, is a beacon of this legacy. Located in front of the House of Peoples Representatives edifice in Arat Kilo, the Library’s mission is to provide high-quality services that inspire learning, research, and community engagement. Wubayehu Mamo, Director General of Abrehot Library, explains, “The name Abrehot, equivalent with enlightenment in Amharic, reflects the library’s role in continuing Ethiopia’s rich tradition of intellectual and philosophical pursuits.” The Director mentioned that this initiative not only preserves Ethiopia’s historical contributions but also allows future generations to explore and expand their horizons, connecting them to Ethiopia’s profound intellectual and cultural legacy.
Since its inauguration in January 2022 by the Prime Minister, the Abrehot Library has welcomed diverse local and international guests, including scholars, students, and cultural figures, who come to explore its extensive resources and modern facilities. Over time, it has achieved its initial objectives and broadened its influence. The Library has become a vital hub for research, provided essential services to its users, and empowered citizens with information. Through initiatives like free family literacy programs and breaking down social and educational barriers, Abrehot has created a space that values individuality, fosters creativity, and inspires young minds. With over 122,000 books accessible online and a strong sense of community, the Library continues to thrive as a dynamic centre for learning and innovation, inspiring creativity and collaboration among its users. The Abrehot Library is a remarkable addition to the Addis Ababa landscape. Its vast collection of 1.4 million books and an average daily footfall of 7,000 visitors has quickly become a learning and intellectual exchange hub. Eight bookstores within the library premises further enrich the environment, creating a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere. It’s truly a testament to the growing thirst for knowledge in the community.
Solomon Yitayeh, a third-year computer science student at Addis Ababa University, finds the Abrehot Library his ideal study spot. Drawn by its reliable connectivity and serene, focus-friendly atmosphere, he explains, “Everyone here is focused; there’s nothing to distract you. The constant access to electricity keeps my PC running, and the environment helps me concentrate and deeply understand my topics.”
The Library recently gained international recognition by joining the Silk Road International Library Alliance, its headquarters in China. This move underscores the Library’s commitment to high-quality library services and reassuring readers of its dedication to providing the best resources and facilities.
“Abrehot has become the leading library in East Africa, with no other library achieving such a transformative influence in such a short time,” Wubayehu told EBR. “Researchers from across the region frequently visit to utilize our resources, and many have become devoted users. Our patrons include university professors, lecturers, and students, who consistently provide constructive feedback on the efficient services we offer, both through our online platforms and our extensive physical collections.”
Further, the Abrehot Library is becoming a vibrant space for young people, hosting events centred on technology, innovation, and AI that spark creativity and inspire new ideas. One memorable event was the A2SV 2024 Hackathon tech competition, which recently welcomed 4,928 participants from 48 African countries. This gathering brought together passionate experts and curious youths to explore the latest trends and breakthroughs, reinforcing Abrehot’s role as a key hub for the next generation to drive Ethiopia’s digital future.
“The vision behind these initiatives is to shape the future of the Library and create connections with the nation it serves. Abrehot recognizes its users as its primary focus, supporting self-education, research, and scholarship. The Library also fosters cooperation by sharing resources through local, national, and international networks,” said the Director.
The Director acknowledged challenges faced by the Abrehot Library, including staff turnover, which has now been partially addressed. “We are on the right track to some extent,” he remarked. Another persistent issue has been the need for more space to accommodate the growing number of users, reflecting the Library’s increasing popularity and the high demand for its services.
The Abrehot is Ethiopia’s most extensive public Library. It rests on 19,000 square meters. With the capacity to host over 2,000 users at a time, it houses approximately 1.4 million books, housing more than 300,000 local and 120,000 international research papers and offers modern facilities, including reading areas, a children’s Library, meeting rooms, an amphitheatre, and a cafeteria. Built at a cost exceeding 1.1 billion Birr, the Library aims to serve as a “people’s university,” providing free access to knowledge and resources for all. In addition to government funding, the Library generates income from internal revenue and various other funds, ensuring it can effectively and efficiently serve its users.
The architecture of the Abrehot Library, designed by ZIAS Design International, is a modern interpretation of Ethiopian cultural heritage. The building features a rectangular shape with a striking façade characterized by seven grand columns inscribed with words in eighteen languages, symbolizing wisdom. The Library is organized into three functional zones: the Knowledge Garden, an outdoor reading space adorned with olive trees; the Knowledge Springs, featuring tranquil water bodies and a children’s playground; and the Knowledge Centre, which houses the Library.
The Library’s Knowledge Garden is a little oasis where readers can unwind. It’s a place to laugh, chill, and soak in the fresh air surrounded by beautiful greenery. Whether chatting with friends or simply enjoying the peaceful vibe, it’s the perfect spot to take a break, refresh your mind, and return to your books feeling recharged and ready to dive back in.
The interior boasts four circular floors surrounding a central atrium, allowing natural light to flood the space, while massive glass windows provide serene views. Additionally, bold orange plaster and intricate calligraphy on the columns reflect traditional Ethiopian design elements, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and cultural significance.
“The library’s book collections cover a wide range of subjects, displayed across the ground floor to the fourth floor,” noted Wubayehu. “We feature works by Ethiopian and African writers, and people truly enjoy these books because they resonate deeply.”
In today’s fast-paced digital age, technology is crucial in transforming libraries like the Abrehot into hubs of innovation and accessibility. Updating with technological advancements is essential to meet evolving user expectations for online resources and interactive learning tools. “As a matter of fact, technological innovation is defined as the creation and application of new or improved technologies, tools, systems, and processes that bring about significant advancements or breakthroughs in various fields. Our plans to stay aligned with evolving educational and technological trends are paramount. Strong plans are in place to ensure it remains functional and effective,” The Director stated.
Abrehot Library is not just a place to read; it’s a dynamic hub that caters to diverse needs. Although it’s not meant to be, it provides a serene and productive co-working space for professionals, including small business owners, consultants, and others who seek a quiet environment to focus on their work and projects. This unique offering has gained popularity, especially considering the rising costs of traditional co-working spaces and office leases. Several people already use Abrehot as an inspiring alternative working space.
Ibrahim Siraj (name changed), a 30-year-old medical doctor, is just one example of how Abrehot Library has become more than a mere repository of books. It’s evolved into a dynamic hub that caters to diverse needs, offering a serene and productive working space for professionals.
Like many others, Ibrahim frequents the Library to immerse himself in his studies. He finds the quiet atmosphere conducive to focused learning. The Library’s spacious reading areas provide an invaluable resource, allowing him to concentrate on his international medical exam without the distractions and high costs associated with traditional spaces.
The vibrant ambience at Abrehot further motivates and inspires visitors, enhancing their concentration and focus. That’s why the Library attracts a wide array of professionals who seek a tranquil environment to complete their work. The extended hours, which stretch until midnight, accommodate diverse schedules and work rhythms.
The presence of safe and affordable parking, coupled with nearby coffee shops and restaurants, further enhances Abrehot’s appeal for executives and senior professionals. This comprehensive range of amenities and services has made Abrehot a preferred choice for many, transforming it into a thriving intellectual and professional hub.
In the coming years, the Abrehot Library envisions a future where innovation thrives, embracing the power of artificial intelligence, robotics, and cutting-edge technologies. With plans to evolve into a renowned research centre, it aims to introduce new facilities, services, and programs that will elevate its role as a beacon of knowledge and creativity. Through these bold initiatives, Abrehot strives to deepen its impact, nurturing a vibrant ecosystem of learning and exploration for generations to come.EBR
