Safaricom Ethiopia Calls for Regulatory Equality to Foster Healthy Competition in Telecoms

Safaricom Ethiopia has called for equality in Ethiopia’s telecom industry, urging the House of People’s Representatives to support regulatory reforms that create a level playing field. The company recently hosted representatives from HPR at its headquarters, where it showcased its projects, services, and the positive impacts of its operations on Ethiopia’s economy and society.

During the visit, Safaricom highlighted the need for regulatory changes, including additional spectrum allocation, the establishment of a TowerCo licensing regime, addressing on-net parity for significant market power, and fostering interoperability between M-Pesa and other mobile financial service providers. The company also advocated for equal access to open platforms for banks and financial institutions to enhance collaboration within the industry.

“Competition shouldn’t overrule collaboration,” emphasized Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia. “The focus should be on delivering better prices and higher quality to customers.”

Safaricom Ethiopia’s commitment in the telecom sector is evident in its growing presence. The company employs 854 staff, 802 of whom are Ethiopians, with 45% under the age of 30. This commitment earned it the Top Employer Award. Additionally, Safaricom has created 10,000 indirect jobs through brand ambassadors and distributors.

With 46% population coverage, 6.1 million registered customers, and over 3,000 network sites, Safaricom continues to expand its footprint in Ethiopia. Through M-Pesa, the company has facilitated an annual remittance inflow of ETB 6.9 billion, supporting financial inclusion and economic development.

By advocating for equality in the telecom industry and engaging with policymakers, Safaricom Ethiopia aims to create a collaborative environment that drives innovation and delivers better outcomes for Ethiopian consumers and businesses.
