Crime in the City Goes Through the Roof

Addis Ababa, home to over four million people, hosts more than 100 diplomatic and international organization missions. The City’s full to burst population; and alarmingly high inefficiency in the security institution in recent times, have caused a significant rise in crime activities in the city. The huge youth unemployment and widening income inequality in the metropolis have further exacerbated the situation.
As many, including residents and diplomats, continue filing theft, burglary and other criminal reports, the city administration is doing too little to match the scale of the problem. EBR’s Kiya Ali explores.

New Marketing Ideas Take Over Addis

Teaser advertising is a new marketing concept slowly emerging in Ethiopia. Wegagen Bank as well as Habesha and United breweries are among the companies that have used teaser campaigns as a part of their marketing strategies in recent times. Teaser ads can generate curiosity and buzz, which may ultimately have a strong impact on the marketability of a certain product or service. However, some experts argue that the approach is costly because the success of a teaser campaign depends on the number of times teaser ads are presented to the consumer. EBR’s Kiya Ali reports.

While feminism as a movement has been around for a long time in most of the world, in Ethiopia, the term itself carries negative connotations for many people. Seen by some as a movement that only benefits a few elite women, or as something that encourages women to hate men, the basic definition of feminism as the fight against gender inequality seems not to have landed. Now, many young gender issues activists and experts are trying to reclaim feminism, and at the same time, take away the pejorative implications of the word in the eyes of the general public. EBR’s Kiya Ali reports.
