Awash Bank has reported strong performance for the 2024/25 fiscal year, marking a year of strong financial performance and grown digital presence. While the bank says 77% of its services are now delivered through digital channels, it also opened 52 new branches, increasing its national network to 989.

This mix of digital growth and physical expansion was shared by the bank’s senior officials during a press briefing held yesterday at the Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa. CEO Tsehay Shiferaw and his team met with journalists to walk through the numbers, talk about the bank’s direction, and reflect on what has been a busy and productive year.

Despite the digital shift, Awash is showing no signs of stepping back from on-the-ground presence. The bank’s leadership says this approach aims to serve both the growing number of digital-first customers and those who still rely on face-to-face banking across the country.

During the fiscal year, the bank’s total revenue rose to ETB 64 billion, up 77% from the previous year. It also registered over ETB 22 billion in pre-tax profit, supported by growth in customer numbers and loan activities. According to CEO Tsehay Shiferaw, the bank’s performance benefited from aligning its strategy with national economic priorities and focusing on financial inclusion.

More than 3 million new customers joined Awash during the year, pushing its total client base past 15 million. Deposits reached ETB 332 billion, with interest-free banking contributing over ETB 37 billion, or around 11.2% of the total.

Digital banking is clearly becoming central to the bank’s operations. Awash processed over ETB 1 trillion in digital transactions, representing more than 76% of all its transactions. Through its digital lending platform “Awash LeHulum,” over ETB 493 million in loans were extended to more than 301,000 customers, without requiring any collateral.

At the same time, the bank mobilized over USD 2 billion in foreign currency, reflecting a 25% rise from the previous year. It also disbursed loans exceeding ETB 219 billion, a 20% increase, with ETB 16.6 billion going specifically to small and micro businesses. Awash says it reached more than 14,000 borrowers in this segment alone.

With support from the Mastercard Foundation, the bank also delivered ETB 1.3 billion in financing to around 12,000 small enterprises through the MESMER program.

Ethiopia has officially launched the Ethiopian Insurance Women Association (EthIWA),  a national milestone set to foster professional advancement, ethical leadership, and continental collaboration among women in insurance.

The launch took place during the 51st Conference and Annual General Assembly of the African Insurance Organization (AIO), held this week in Addis Ababa. After nearly two decades of absence from the African Insurance Women Association (AIWA) due to the lack of a national women’s platform, Ethiopia now joins the continental network through the formation of EthIWA.

At the helm of this groundbreaking association is none other than Meseret Bezabih, CEO of Hibret Insurance S.C. and one of the most respected figures in Ethiopia’s insurance landscape. Elected as the first president of EthIWA, Meseret brings decades of experience, a record of corporate leadership, and a passion for women’s advancement to the role.

“Today, I am here to herald good news about the establishment of Ethiopian Insurance Women Association (EthIWA) at the 20th birthday of the African Insurance Women Association (AIWA) established in 2005,” she announced in her keynote speech at the launch event.

She highlighted AIWA’s core principles as a non-religious, non-political, and non-ethnic professional association, dedicated to the growth of women in the African insurance industry.

“The success of any goal is unattainable without the active participation of women,” she emphasized, adding, “Africa and Ethiopia are home to numerous thriving institutions led by women, a testament to the value of empowering female professionals.”

Meseret also reflected on the deeper qualities women bring to leadership: care, resilience, and commitment, traits often nurtured through personal roles such as motherhood and caregiving, yet deeply impactful in corporate governance and sectoral growth.

EthIWA’s establishment is expected to catalyze mentorship, leadership development, and cross-border collaboration. As a member of AIWA, the association will give Ethiopian insurance professionals a long-overdue voice on continental platforms and help elevate local standards to global levels.

In closing, Meseret reaffirmed EthIWA’s dedication: “We are determined and ready to work in full solidarity with AIWA to promote the advancement of women in Africa’s insurance industry.”

Ethiopia has established 374 additional weekend markets over the past nine months, bringing the total number of operational Saturday and Sunday markets across the country to 1,434. The expansion aims to improve access to goods, stabilize consumer prices, and stimulate local economies through more inclusive trade platforms.

The milestone was revealed during a high-level national macroeconomic and sectoral performance review convened this morning by the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration. Minister Kassahun Gofe led the session alongside Dr. Belete Molla, Minister of Innovation and Technology. The forum engaged ministry staff and stakeholders in a joint assessment of progress made in the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year.

The review highlighted major achievements beyond market expansions. Over 2.6 million online business registrations and licenses were processed—marking a 102% achievement against the ministry’s plan. This surge in digital registration reflects the government’s commitment to simplifying and modernizing business procedures.

In a historic first, Ethiopia’s export revenues have surpassed USD 5.3 billion within the same nine-month period—making it the highest figure recorded in the country’s export trade history. The Ministry has set an ambitious target to reach USD 7 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

Efforts in regulating the petroleum sector were also cited as a key success. The ministry noted improved oversight in oil marketing and pricing mechanisms, contributing to better supply stability.

“These achievements are a reflection of the enabling environment created by ongoing macroeconomic reforms,” Minister Kassahun said, crediting institutional collaboration and reform-driven momentum for the performance surge.

The report paints a picture of a country intensifying its trade efforts through local innovation, regulatory improvement, and global engagement—laying the groundwork for more integrated and competitive economic growth.
