Bright Project to be Fully Implemented Across Three Key Ethiopian Basins with USD 49.45 Million Euros in Support
The Ministry of Water and Energy announced that the Bright Project, covering the Abay, Awash, and Tekeze basins, is nearing full implementation. The announcement came during a stakeholder discussion in Addis Ababa, organized by the Water and Land Resources Center.
The Bright Project involves the creation of a Basin Information System, designed to collect data on water quantity, quality, and watershed information across five basins—Abay, Awash, Tekeze, Omo Gibe, and Semt Valley—spanning 11 regions. The goal is to protect, conserve, and develop these vital water basins.
The initiative operates on a coordinated platform, integrating federal, regional, and district-level stakeholders, to manage the basin regions and assess their nature effectively.
Dr. Abraha Adugna, State Minister for Water Resources Management, emphasized that the project will play a key role in implementing Ethiopia’s national integrated water resources management plan. He highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach across the Abay, Awash, and Tekeze basins to drive significant changes with a unified vision and strategy.
Dr. Gete Zeleke, Director General of the Water and Land Resources Center, explained that the Bright Project is a crucial component of Ethiopia’s Integrated Water Resources Management Program. He reiterated that the project is being implemented in a participatory manner to ensure its sustainability.
