Ethiopian Airlines to Relocate JFK Operations to New $19 Billion Terminal in 2026

EBR_News Mar 17, 2026

Ethiopian Airlines has announced a strategic partnership with The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport, relocating its New York operations to the state-of-the-art facility when it opens later this year, according to a joint announcement from the airline and the terminal operator.

The carrier, a Star Alliance member, will transition from its current location at JFK’s Terminal 7 to the New Terminal One, which is a key component of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s $19 billion transformation of JFK Airport into a world-class international gateway. The airline will continue offering service from New York to its Addis Ababa hub, providing one-stop access to destinations throughout Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

Jennifer Aument, Chief Executive Officer of The New Terminal One, stated that welcoming Ethiopian Airlines strengthens JFK’s role as a premier gateway to Africa while delivering the modern, seamless experience travelers expect from a next-generation international terminal. The facility is scheduled to open its first 14 gates in 2026, with full completion of all 23 gates expected by 2030.

Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines Group, said the partnership is a significant step in the service the airline offers to and from JFK. “Our customers will benefit from a world-class airport terminal experience that complements our award-winning service, while enhancing connectivity, convenience, and travel options between Addis Ababa, New York and our global network,” he stated.

The New Terminal One will feature the latest technology, modern amenities, elevated retail and dining options, and sustainable design to maximize operational efficiency and passenger comfort. It aims to obtain a top 5-star Skytrax rating and will be built by union labor with participation goals targeting minority-owned, women-owned, and service-disabled veteran-owned businesses.

Ethiopian Airlines joins a growing community of leading global airlines serving the terminal, including Air France, KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, EGYPTAIR, and China Eastern Airlines. The facility, spanning 2.6 million square feet at completion, will be the largest terminal at JFK and nearly the same size as LaGuardia Airport’s two new terminals combined.
