As a magazine dedicated to promoting private sector development, EBR covers topics as diverse as Business Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development, Marketing Strategy, Organizational Change, Human Capital, International Trade, Finance, Tax, Customs, Public Policy, Public Sector Development, Privatization, Technology, Commercial and Legal issues.

The Junior Staff Writer:

EBR would like to hire talented and experienced Junior Staff Writers to join its editorial team. The Staff Writers will be tasked to be part of a team that conducts in-depth research and also will be tasked to conduct interviews to produce high-quality original news articles, reviews, features and analyses on business-related topics, including finance, trade, entrepreneurship, technology and private and public sector development. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Conducting research on assigned topics;
  • Interviewing individuals relevant to the article;
  • Writing content according to a brief;
  • Attending meetings to delegate new tasks;
  • Editing your own and/or coworkers’ writing;
  • Keeping abreast of current events.
  • Develop and maintain sources across various industries to stay up to date on trends and breaking news;
  • Collaborate with editors and other reporters to generate story ideas, synopsis, pitch compelling angles and compelling headlines on various issues;
  • Attend events and conferences to report on and also network and build relationships with key players in the business world;
  • Proofreading content for errors and inconsistencies; 
  • Meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and integrity in reporting;
  • Upholds journalism ethics and standards; and
  • Ensures strict adherence to the firm’s content guidelines.

Reports to:  Senior Business Journalist

Job Requirements

Formal Education/Qualification and work experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and 0 to 1 year of experience in similar settings. 

Professional requirements:

  • Strong research and analytical skills with a deep understanding of writing styles;
  • Exceptional verbal, written, proofreading and grammar fluency in English;
  • Experienced in proposing and developing new investigations with high impact potential, and executing them at the highest level by working closely with the team and also one that can work individually;
  • Knowledge and experience working on business leadership, entrepreneurship and enterprise development, marketing strategy, organizational change, human capital, international trade, finance, tax, customs, public policy, public sector development, privatization, technology, commercial and legal issues;
  • Experience with bottom-up planning processes; and
  • Experience with participatory approaches and stakeholder networks.

  • Demonstrated proficiency working in transdisciplinary research teams
  • Excellent team player, able to interact well and bring out the best in editorial team members; 
  • Capable to inspire and motivate coworkers;
  • Exceptional link to the Ethiopian economic journalism community, building a solid institutional and individual professional network that will support the success of EBR;
  • Affinity with and commitment to each edition’s and EBR’s goals; 
  • The ability to work well under pressure, be proactive and efficient;
  • Possess business organization skills – planning, setting priorities, organizing, evaluating, monitoring and multi-tasking.

  • Ability to operate autonomously and effectively communicate with the editor-in-chief;
