UN Steps Closer to Nuclear Free World

The UN adopted the long-awaited Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Although the nuclear owners including USA, UK, Russia, china, and France have been silent, 122 countries have signed the final draft of the treaty, which bans outright the use, threat of use, development, production, testing and stockpiling of nuclear weapons under any means.

Disarming nuclear weapons will be the next step of UN, following the treaty entering into enforcement. “the treaty is important step towards the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons,” stated António Guterres, UN chief.

civil society groups led by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), played monumental role in securing the number of countries required to enforce the treaty. Negotiations and activism have been underway for the last three decades, until the treaty is approved at UN general assembly in 2017 and reached enforcement level today.
