Top 10 African Economies Leading in Industry
According to the Industrial Development Report 2020, much of the world, especially Africa, is not engaging with new technology and remains excluded from recent technological breakthroughs.
Capacity to produce and export manufactured goods, technological deepening and upgrading, and world impact are the three dimensions used to evaluate countries and produce the ranking. The report categorized ten global economies as frontrunners, 23 as followers in production, 17 as followers in use, 16 as latecomers in production, and 13 as latecomers in use.
Germany, Japan, China, Republic of Korea, and USA are the global leaders. Least Developed Countries (LDCs), especially in Africa, are yet to utilize Advanced Digital Production (ADP) on a significant level.
Nigeria and Kenya ranked 11th and 14th in Africa, respectively. South Africa, whose manufacturing share of GDP is around 15Pct, is ready for Industry 4.0, according to the report. Egypt, Mauritius, South Africa, and Tunisia are listed under ‘emerging industrial economies.’
Ethiopia ranks 29th in Africa and 141st globally, an improvement from 148th in 2015. There is increasing FDI in light manufacturing especially from China, over the past recent years. Ethiopia’s share of manufacturing of GDP is 5.6Pct. EBR
