Neway Gebreab, Economic Advisor to Meles and Hailemariam, Dies
Former Advisor to Ethiopian Prime ministers, Neway Gebregab, has passed away today. He was a chief economic advisor to former Prime Ministers of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn and the late Meles Zenawi.
During his tenure at Prime Minister Office, Ethiopia has achieved an economic trajectory, registering a double digit growth in GDP for over a decade and the country has become one of the fastest growing economies globally.
Neway was also an Executive Director of the Ethiopian Development Research Institute and board chairperson of National Bank of Ethiopia for over a decade.
During the 1960s and early 1970s Neway has worked as an expert at Development Bank of Ethiopia and the Planning Commission. He then worked as a Consultant in the United Kingdom and served as a staff member or consultant for various United Nations organisations.
He obtained his undergraduate degree in economics from Haile Selassie University, Addis Ababa, and completed B.Litt. degree in economics from Oxford University. In 2017, he was also officially declared as Ethiopia’s candidate for African Union Economic Affair Commissionership.
