Dire Dawa Sees its First Case of Coronavirus

Dire Dawa sees its first case of coronavirus after a 42 years old man who came from Australia tested positive. This has raised the total confirmed cases in Ethiopia to 26.

The newly confirmed case is a 42 years old male Ethiopian who lives in Dire Dawa. He arrived from Australia to Addis Ababa on March 18, 2020, few days before the implementation of the mandatory quarantine rule. He travelled from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa on March 19, 2020.

Upon developing symptoms, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) conducted a laboratory test and his result confirmed positive for COVID-19. The patient is now isolated and is being treated in Dire Dawa.

Currently, there are 22 cases in the treatment center of the government. While two of the patients are in critical condition, the remaining are in normal conditions.

Until today’s afternoon, EPHI tested 1,013 people, while 66 of the laboratory tests were conducted within 24 hours.

Earlier today, Ministry of Health announced that Armauer Hansen Research Institute and National Animal Health Diagnosis & Investigation Center has started testing 400 people a day.
