Top 10 Africa's 10 Largest Mobile Markets by Subscriptions, 2018

Because of its 30pct per year growth since 2000, Africa is currently the second largest telecom market in the world, next to Asia. By the end of June 2018, the number of mobile subscriptions in Africa was 1.04 billion, up from the one billion subscriptions at the end of 2017. As a result, the continent’s mobile penetration rate reached 82Pct in 2018.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, leads in terms of mobile subscription with 150.3 million mobile subscriptions at end of June 2018, followed by South Africa with 99 million, Egypt with 98.8 million and Ethiopia with 64 million. Since 2000, Ethiopia has made great strides in expanding telecommunications services, especially with the help of Chinese companies such as Zhongxin Telecommunication Equipment and Huawei Technologies. The two companies  have executed more than two billion dollars worth of telecom expansion projects after 2013.
