Top 10 Public Universities Ranked by Number of Graduates in 2013/14

For many years, the number of graduates from public universities in Ethiopia has been minimal due to the low higher education enrolment rate. A small percentage of students who complete high school would enter universities. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s close to 75,000 students took the university entrance exam annually. But only 3,000 were admitted to public universities and colleges.

As the number of universities started to increase, the higher education enrolment rate started to boom, as did the number of graduates.  In 2006/7 academic year, close to 32,000 students were graduated from public universities with a bachelor’s, masters or doctoral degree. This number has now reached 84,527, according to the Ministry of Education.

Addis Ababa University (AAU), the oldest higher education establishment in the country still leads other universities by graduating 9,924 students across all programs in the most recent academic year. AAU is followed by Jimma and Bahir Dar universities, which graduated 6,621 and 6,603 students, respectively.

However, despite the surge in higher education enrolment and graduation rates, many argue that the urge for higher education expansion has reduced the quality of education that students are receiving. As government pressures mounted for increased expansion, public universities struggle with dwindling per student budgetary allocations, shortage of qualified staff and inadequate supply of much-needed resources, which contributes to the poor quality of higher education.

The Ministry of Education recently announced that 115,680 students will join universities in the current Ethiopian fiscal year, hinting that the number of university graduates will keep increasing in the years to come.
