The sixth International Floriculture and Horticulture Trade Fair is to be held in Addis Ababa from March 25 to 27, 2015.More than 100 domestic producers and 25 international companies from 12 countries have already registered and are expected to participate in the HortiFlora Ethiopia 2015 Expo.

The EthiopianHorticulture Producers and Exporters Association (EHPEA) and HPP Exhibitions Ethiopia, organizers of the expo, have held a briefing session on the upcoming event, on February 26, 2015, at Ghion Hotel. HPP Exhibition is an international event organising company that promotes activities in the fields of floriculture, horticulture and agriculture, with offices in Holland, Ecuador and Ethiopia. It has held five consecutive expos in Ethiopia since 2005.

“We have chosen Ethiopia due to its huge potential for companies engaged in floriculture, horticulture and agriculture productions, said Dick van Haamsdonk, CEO of HPP International Exhibitions Group. ‘‘This expo will showcase Ethiopia’s potential for international buyer countries.’’

Ethiopia generated around USD212 million from the flower sector in 2011/12. However, this level of achievement declined to USD186.7 million in the 2012/13 fiscal year. It bounced back in 2013/14, earning the country close to USD200 million.

“The recent worldwide economic crises have significantly reduced the purchasing capacity of international buyers,’’ said Dick. ‘‘However, it is improving and we are also succeeding in finding other potential buyers like Russia and other countries.”

Companies from Kenya, China, Turkey, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, and others from the Middle East and Asia have already registered to participate in the trade fair, according to organizers. Buyers from Russia, Germany, Sweden, the Middle East and other countries have also registered, according to ZelalemMessele, chairman of the EHPEA.

The Netherlands, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Belgium, the UAE, Japan, USA and France are major importers of Ethiopian flowers. The Netherlands consumes 80.3Pct of Ethiopia’s flower.

Currently there are 46 local companies and 61 international companies engaged in the sector. Nine companies have been also established by joint venture. A total of 1,426 hectares of land is covered with flowers, whilefruits and vegetables are cultivated on 11,371 hectares.
