New Research Centre to Promote Environmental Policies

The Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI) has announced the establishment of the Environment and Climate Research Centre (ECRC) on February 23, 2015, at a launching ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel.

The Centre is tasked with producing policy-oriented research on the economics of environment and valuating the real-time effects of the Carbon Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) that Ethiopia is trying to create. The Centre will have more than 40 researchers.

The CRGE was launched two years ago to achieve the country’s development goals while limiting carbon emissions, which is currentlyestimated to be around 400 metric tonnes,to 150 metric tonnes by 2030.

“[The Centre] will produce research that will help to achieve our goals,” said Neway Gebreab, director of the EDRI and economic advisor to thePrime Minister.

By incorporating the operations of the former Environmental Economy Policy Forum of Ethiopia (EEPFE), the Centre is established under EDRI. EDRI was established 10 years ago and is known for conducting research that is targeted towards policymakers.

The ECRC will work with the EDRI, Environment for Development Initiative (EfD) and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) as partners, and also with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Water and Energy, Ministry of Industry and local and international universities, according to Hailessellassie Medhin, researcher at the EDRI, who was also involved in establishing the centre.

The partners, DFID and the ministries will finance the Centre, in addition to the budget to be allocated from the government, based on proposals from researchers.

The Centre will be overlooked by a steering committee comprised of the EDRI, EfD and GGGI. It also has a National Advisory Committee (NAC) fromthe government and nongovernment offices.

Hi there, just wanted to share with you that we had a great holiday at Marina de Bolnuevo in August of this year (http://www.marinadebolnuevo.co.uk/about-bolnuevo). We flew into San Javier and hired a car from the airport for the short drive to Bolnuevo. The beaches are perfect, most of them awarded the Blue Flag. The cafes were great, with paella on the beach a highlight and managed a day on the nudist beach there. Very liberating. We also visited the Big Guns, The Roman Mines and the Sand sculptures. Will be returning there again next year. Look forward to catching up with you at Marina de Bolnuevo in the next few months. Thanks for reading Niall.
